In the past 3 years of high school, I spent it with many people throughout the years and have been exposed to many people of different races. Knowing that my school is diverse, I decided to go deeper into what diversity really is in schools specifically, rather than communities. In my Global Environment class, I grouped up with some friends and decided to go deeper into what Diversity really is through our eyes. Based on my group research on diversity in our communities, I decided to research our schools diversity. Knowing the school myself has its truth to the school that no one else sees ever since I have entered this class. In this case, I think it is diverse, but segregated by the many types of races our school holds. In this narrative, Below, I will explain the chosen pictures I have taken to prove my opinion that my school is indeed a diversified yet segregated school.
This image was taken on April 9th, 2013 after 9th period dismissal on a normal school day. The reason why I chose this image was because you can easily view a group of black and Hispanic groups hanging around “la bodega” to hang out after school. There are many names that go for this area where students hang out. The names are: “Dirty store” and “Cheapy-Cheapy store”. This is usually a daily thing for these specific groups hanging out during this time since it’s after school. It’s mainly a place where teens spend their afternoon “catching” up with friends from school. But during the morning, the store crowds up with kids wanting to buy breakfast before 2nd period. Me knowing the school, can get used to seeing the same crowd everyday in the same area just chilling. You can also see that the school is segregated because people tend to hang out with others of the same race as them. This indeed is a perfect example of how our school is diverse but segregated by many different races.
This picture is similar to the picture above since it was taken on April 9th, 2013, the same day as the other image. I took this picture out of the blue coming out of school. Right when I got home and looked at the image, I pictured the kids walking together after school. I saw that they were all from different races and hang out with each other. This is a perfect example of a group of friends at my school is diverse and not segregated. Although my research was based on segregated diverse schools, this picture stuck out to me the most.
I took this image on April 10th, 2013. I took it because I have seen this group of “nerds” around everywhere. I consider them “nerds” because of the way they would act in school: walking around, studying for their AP exams and having good grades. Around school, these specific people get judged because of how smart they are by the “cool” kids. In a way, you can tell that these students are serious on their studies and want to accomplish something in life. This is an example of the many groups my school has that people don’t see, our schools diverse but segregated. I think that if people visioned this, they would see the reality. But, people don’t see the fact that all they care about is being with people they can relate to and not get used to the fact that there are opportunities to meet new people.
This picture was taken on April 15th, 2013 in my ceramics class. I took this image because there are many tables where everyone seems to get along with each other. This picture shows the 2 tables that are filled with Dominicans enjoying class with one another, compared to other tables where it’s diversified. This shows that people segregate themselves in school to people they know. I believe this because there really wouldn’t be a point on hanging out with other people when you got friends of your own, Mind you, this is a junior and senior art class, so this means that people know each other for a good while throughout high school.
Another part about what I found while researching the schools diversity is the fact that people always judge one another. I know this because In the 3rd picture where the “nerds” are walking to class always get judged because they always studying and not sitting back and relaxing. The term “Judge” can be used a lot on why our schools segregated because of how people are. This is one cause that people don’t really see because people themselves haven’t experienced it before.
As a result to these pictures, I chose them because each had a specific meaning to it. I can say that our school can be considered “diverse” because of all the races and culture we have in my school. I myself notice this because I'm a social person in school who gets along with anyone and everyone at my school. I can conclude that researching the “schools diversity” made it seem that our school’s segregated because of the fact that people hang out with people that are like them. In my opinion, people have that mentality where they don’t realize what’s going on around them and focus on themselves. This can be an example on how the real world would be when it comes to all the races NYC and the country has, Not only to teenagers in NYC but teenagers nationwide, because we see the diversity America has and it is a wonderful thing that we have this country that's diversified and we are all one as 1 nation, even NYC is a main area where it’s a “tossed salad” of these races all in 1 city. These pictures can speak a lot on why NYC schools are like this: being diverse but segregated because we are a populated city with many races all in one. Therefore, Our school, my school can be a perfect example on how NYC schools really are: Diversified, but are all schools segregated?
