Environment dictionary definition:
the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.
In order to get a better idea for my self about what environment meant I decided to look up the real definition. I noticed that the environment in a way includes nature, neighborhood, and community. It leads to one another.
The environment means to me what I encounter everyday, what I live through and I interact with a daily basis. Like the definition, its how I operate.

Nature:
I live with nature right by my side. The picture on the left is Devoe park. This park is not only a regular field with trees, and playgrounds but my neighborhood, environment, and part of my community. I see this park everyday, and every year of every season, and yet everyday I see new captivating beauty portrayed in this park . I see the seasons changes everyday, and the growth of this place right in front of my eyes. I feel like nature hasn't been really appreciated for it beauty or value; as a person growing up in this park, it has always been known for being dangerous. But I question, how can that be true? Do we step in to this park and get eaten by trees or lost in a never ending park. Not quite, but when this park is brought up, its always referenced to being in the Bronx typically know for being highly rated for violence and danger; or a park where gang violence activity occurs. Everyone is so afraid of this park but no one stops to appreciate the beauty and numerous trees standing.
Neighborhood: to me neighborhood is like community on a smaller scale. Its more of my building, home, The Bronx, and my block. Its those interactions with the environment on a smaller scale. It gives a closer to look on my personality and the way I live in my home.
Community:
Like the picture on the left, I think that basically describes what community means. But i feel like on a more human interaction. More on how I communicate and interact with the people in the area I live in. I also see a relationship in how we relay and need each other. i also see

What do these ideas mean to you?
These ideas to me are a build up of myself and where I am placed in society. What I am surrounded by and are pieces of myself essentially. These ideas should have a correlation to who you are. For every person where and what they are surrounded is different, which is why everyone to me is different. It is also what you take from your community and environment that is build up of you.
How do you see your relationship to each of these?
Every single word, has a relationship to me because it's what is around me and the society most around me. The way I view my environment and neighborhood not only shows what I see but what is in front of me. How does these words have an impact on me. Like the nature, what do I get out of it. To answer that question nature, is what I have all the years I have grown up in my neighborhood, and how I interacted with nature.
How do you see yourself in these various places?
I am comfortable with these various places. The Bronx is part of me and when other people feel some type of way toward the ideas associated with the Bronx, I associate the Bronx as my home. When I see myself in these areas I remember back to my childhood: where I went to school (k-8). My first steps of life, example of walking, talking, running. The basic foundation of who I am. The layers I will use when I grow up.
How have these places influenced you and you them? What are your defining experiences in these places?Thinking about how my environment has influenced me, I realized that the way I act and who I am was influenced. Who am I ? I'm loud, outgoing, funny, talkative. Being in my environment I had to learn to adapt to the wellspring of Latin culture in the Bronx. I had to make myself known and seen, which is probably why I am so loud and talkative. I'm also outgoing and caring. I had to be open and learn the Latin culture that was all around me. I influence my environment, by sharing a piece of my culture and who I am to them. Teaching the various things about Asian culture. Going to school in the Bronx was interesting, and one of my numerous defining moments. I had to adapt myself as a child to the different kids in my class. Every year being asked why I look different, so it was interesting how that would have gone.

The mental mapping was an interesting process that reveal information that wasn’t quite obvious, and big ideas laid within everyones maps. I have seen people think outside what they see everyday in their neighborhoods and discover meaning and purpose in how our communities run. I think mental mapping is a great and effective methodology to document data and use as good material for our research.
I’m taking something that I have never realized from mental mapping. Mental mapping showed me my environment in a different lens. I noticed that I have always passed my neighborhood and have retain images and information, but never analyzed what it actually means. Mental mapping, is that step further when we test and question ourselves what shows importance and what has meaning. What each place means and what that place symbolize. As teens, we notice everything but we don’t take the time to analyze why we retain the information. We uncover the true meaning through mental mapping. I have taken away what meaning my environment has actually given. Like how certain places, meant different things, or demonstrated a meaning to me.
New questions have came up during the research process and came up more pertaining to “WHY”? I question things that really don’t have answers; it’s more questioning why society does things and why we feel disconnected. Though we may have an idea, I feel like these ideas are too big to pinpoint precisely, everything is always going to come back to other topics.
I have had questions, like why the Bronx has always been associated with a bad image. Or why certain things have a place in my neighborhood, and I feel like I don’t. I question people’s action in my neighborhood, and why I feel disconnected. I have possibly answered some of these questions, and have noticed there has been a correlation to norms, race, and equality and to the comparative personalities I share to my community.
I feel like if I was going to share this research and all the data we have gotten out of it, it would be more on a micro level, and sometimes I could use it to get information out of others, or show them the different meaning I have gained out of mental mapping and how it communities can be the same on a level. For example when I go to college. I know I will be finding myself in a different community. Though I will, I will always have to refer to where I am from. Like if a fellow student were to ask me, “How is the Bronx?” I know there will be so much to say now and compare how my place is with theirs. It’s a way to educate each others and develop a basis of how society works and where we come from.
I would maybe have more of an accurate way to show our maps. Like for me, I’m more visual and I like the maps that were drawn, but maybe if we were to record the neighborhood, and have film of the community put together that would be cool. Other ways we could have capture, what we are interested in our neighborhood; we could have done surveys on neighbors or people that interact within our neighborhoods, and analyze the information. We could use that information and see if they can come up with themes and similarities and differences they feel about the neighborhood.

Ad- Buster Project
Methodology:
Data Collection:
I started my data collection as soon as I left school. The ads were taken on my way home from school. It consists of me walking from HSES on 59th, making my way over to the train. Getting on the train, then getting off in the Bronx, then my way home from the train. I looked for ads that sold a service, a product, and ads that promoted anything. I looked for ads in particular places that consisted of ads, like the bus stop and inside the trains. I also focused on ads that were posted in front of stores. I choose a lot of locations that advertisements are typically put and founded. That was my main way of seeking out my ads.

Data Analysis
Content Analysis: When I was analyzing my ads, I particularly focused a lot on location because I noticed that the
location determined the level of the product and what target class group would be able to actually afford it. I also
noticed the balance between gender advertisement and what gender it appears for but could also be for.
I included purpose of the product to compare uses of products and see if different location promoted different things
based on location. Like if a product could only be used for these certain people of a certain location than of any other.
Basically promoting products to consumers that could afford it or is up to their standard. For each ad, I picked
its purpose, then determined what it appears to be targeted for and then categorized it to who would
actually be able to afford it.

Critical discourse analysis: Out of all my ads, I chose the Gotham Skin Care - Fall special ad. I choose this ad in particular because of what they ad was selling and the location of this ad. This ad is for beauty enhancements
and a free Botox treatment for purchasing another of their product. The word free was emphasizes and left people wanting this free Botox. Who doesn't like free stuff? This ad was located on 59th Manhattan and I have never seen an ad like this in the Bronx. In this ad there was a female in her mid-twenties (See figure) The female is gorgeous, and very appealing to those who are seeking to be as beautiful as her, hence the beauty enhancement options being advertised. Also we see that this is a promotion and for a limited time for the fall season in particular, so consumers have a limited of time to take up on this offer.

Findings:
Content Analysis:
In the two graphs, I focused a lot on what social economic group was being targeted in each of the location. In Manhattan, there was a lot of ads that were targeted for the high class and in the Bronx towards the middle and low class. Then I broke it down to see the purpose of these ads in general. The correlation between what types of ads, and quality of products, being distributed in locations based on that.
When I went through my data I noticed that a lot of the ads were promoting products that were enhancements. What do I consider an enhancement? A lot of my ads sold products that are probably not need in life, but could be use as an extra. Like Botox, eye laser surgery instead of glasses, a high tech razor instead of a normal one, a skin transform treatment.
Note that most ads in the Bronx were in spanish and not in english. I don't know if that was done to aid spanish speakers or because the location was of one a type were spanish people lived and they ssumed spanish people don't know english. Interesting thought I had about
Critical Discourse Analysis:
I chose the Gotham skin care ad because of what the ad was selling and how expensive their product was. Looking at the ad, I saw the word free and Botox. Already knowing beforehand that Botox treatments aren't cheap, giving away a free Botox treatment obviously means that the other product you are buying must be expensive, in fact it should be so expensive enough for them to offer a Botox treatment and earn profits. Thats pretty expensive! (To follow up, I checked prices online and let me tell you. SO EXPENSIVE $$$$) I made a correlation that this ad represented a product that was expensive and targeted to people who can afford the product. This ad is located in Manhattan to represent a store in Manhattan, just made me see more that this was targeted for those who can afford that probably live in that area. Making me then also see that they locate themselves there because that's where they believe the consumers who can afford their product live there. While they don't locate themselves in the Bronx or put up ads there because maybe they believe those people can not afford their products. Which is why, out of all the ads I felt as if this ad had a bigger meaning and bigger objective.
I also noticed that this ad was for beauty enhancement, which made me think--> this ad is located in Manhattan for those who are in the high class. This is a service deliberately for rich people that are demanded by them; because if it wasn't than there're wouldn't be a store or business for it. #Correlation: rich people are the ones that can get beauty enhancement. Beauty enhancement is limited to a certain class.

Discussion
I learn that ads are purposely used to pertain a message, and there are like motives I would say in how advertisements are used to attract certain consumers. Advertisements are also used to judge and marginalize people. From all my ads, I feel that ads are put up in located and in certain places where they will attract a certain type of consumers. This makes me think that companies and advertisement people do this purposely. Just like people judge and marginalize so do companies. Not just the location but also the purpose of the product. A lot of the products are decadent things people may not really need, but buy to be in, like name brands perfume, and more than expensive clothes, and razors.
In some of my ads, I do notice a lot of enhancement and extra things that life offer. A few ads, advertised beauty enhancements offer, like face products and Botox. I also noticed that my clothes ads, made people look beautiful, lovely, and presentable, like as if that is how you have to dress in order to be happy or pretty. I also saw ads that promoted trips and get away. Like in order to be happy you need to get away in life, which was interesting to see that that’s the approach we take to get comfort and relaxation. Advertisements make you believe you need their product in order to gain happiness or enjoyment of life. This makes kids and people in general to buy into it and relay on products in order to make people happy. This makes me think in class, the topic of happiness and if it is attainable and how we decide what makes us happy. Advertisement is such a large contributor to the answer for every individual. People who buy in eventually will have to say they are happy because of what these products supposedly offer.
I wonder how do companies chose were to advertise their products. Is there a list of standards that their product have that consumers also have to meet? Is location a major factor of advertisement and if so, is there a particular reason why it is in Manhattan? That makes me also want to bring up advertisement in particular in Manhattan. Where they are numerous advertisements of high price products centered there? Also at the fact that people in places in the Bronx does not have the availability of these ads because they are not targeted. Can someone in the Bronx not see an ad on nice perfume because they can't afford it. Does it make it wrong to marginalize people on products they probably won't be able to afford for the better good?
