Crowded Place
This picture was taken in Union Square from my view in Forever 21.There are people in this picture who are entertainers, tourists and just “regular” people.
This place doesn’t hold significant meaning to me. I mostly go to Union Square to go shopping or to just hang out around there. It holds no emotional value to me. Union Square, is almost always crowded with people strolling along, hipsters or entertainers. It’s always usually filled with a good amount of people but not as crowded and packed as Times Square. The story behind this picture: I was shopping with my friends around 11am and surprisingly, this place wasn’t as crowded as it always is but since it’s considered a crowded place I chose this picture.

Isolated Place
This picture was taken while I was on the Long Island Rail Road train. I was on my way to go prom dress shopping. This location seemed isolated to me since it wasn’t busy in terms of people and neither was it filled with commercial stores. I did not see one person here. It seemed set apart from cities or local stores. It’s probably isolated because it’s right next to the train and not many houses were placed next to it. On my ride to the prom dress store (Estelle's), I saw mostly warehouses and abandoned buildings that were near the railroad. Not only was there no one around while I took the picture in the early afternoon, but it remained the same on my way back (which was around 5 o’clock). The time difference in this area makes no difference on the impact of how many people are here. Whether it be morning or night, this area would still be isolated. This specific location seems very lonely and secluded which can cause an eery feeling to others who might be walking alone through here.
Natural Place
This picture was taken when I was visiting Pace University in Pleasantville, New York located in Westchester. This picture of a lake surrounded by trees, was taken while on a campus tour. This place is significantly important to me because it was the first time I visited Pace University, my school and home for the next 4 years of my life. I chose this picture in general because I felt it captured the real essence of nature as compared to New York City nature. NYC nature is often man made such as playgrounds. Most parks that capture the real sense of nature in New York City are among the 5 boroughs but are not really seen everywhere around Manhattan.
This seemed like the most natural place to me in all aspects outside of the city. The Pleasantville campus has a farm of its own and a nature center and is big on conserving the nature surrounding and in the campus. This picture of the lake isn’t typically seen in my everyday life in the city. My everyday life in the city consists of subway rides, manmade playgrounds, trees, and crowded streets. Although my community in Riverdale has more nature than the actual city, Pleasantville has captured more natural aspects. The lake itself tied everything together. The campus is surrounded by trees as compared to my high school.

Unnatural Place
As I walk through my community in Riverdale, I feel as if I'm surrounded by nature in all ways as compared to the city. I've come to a realization that my surroundings are full of nature but it isn't as natural as natural really is. When thinking of nature, I usually think of the time when I visited Lake George and rode a horse through the Adirondack mountains. That is when I saw nature in its purest form. The flowerbeds in this picture are watered daily by the tenants of the house while the trees and plants in the mountains are watered whenever it rains. A natural place is meant to be kept stable by the environment itself rather than an actual human being. So, in fact the opposite of my natural picture is a picture of a flower bed placed in Riverdale. This is unnatural to me being that it was planted there by humans themselves in order to look pretty instead of natural. In this aspect, the nature is meant to complement the house and the sidewalk and was placed there on purpose rather than something that has naturally been grown there. Although it captures a sense of nature, it doesn’t capture what nature is in my opinion.
Safe Place
What is a safe/unsafe place to me?
A safe place is typically associated with the amount of people in that location and the type of people in it as well. A safe place doesn’t have to be crowded nor isolated in order to be considered safe. Bad things can happen whether or not there are people in the neighborhood. The type of people that I do not feel safe around resemble hoodlums, sketchy people who are constantly looking at me and crazy mentally ill people such as, some homeless people. I feel safe around people who share the same qualities as me such as being on their phone and listening to music. I also feel safe around most elderly people since they can’t really harm me in anyway. I feel safer around females because I feel that I can relate and connect to them since they are my gender.
This picture was taken in the Bronx specifically in Riverdale and more specifically, North Riverdale. My building, called Skyview has three buildings (5700, 5800 and 5900). This picture was taken on a pathway outside of 5800. In this picture, there is a lady walking down the pathway. This lady is a health teacher in my school and apparently, lives in my building. This place is significant because it’s in my neighborhood which is the main reason I consider it safe. I also chose this picture because it shows how a person can also make a neighborhood safe. My teacher, Ms.B is also what makes it safe. Knowing that you are walking by a familiar face makes it automatically safer. For example, walking around my school is always considered safe for me because I am familiar with neighborhood and I feel safer knowing that I know these faces. I don’t remember the story behind this picture. I believe I was walking to the bus stop and I was trying to walk slow because I really was not looking forward to the bus ride with my previous health teacher.

Unsafe Place
This picture was taken in Van Cortlandt Park located in Bronx, New York on a Sunday morning around 10/11 am. It is classified as an unsafe location to me because it was lonely and there was no other human presence in sight except for mine and my mothers. This picture is unsafe mostly because it surrounded by forest. If something happens to you, for example if you get assaulted you have nowhere to run to except directly into the woods, into nature where no one will help you or back into the hands of your suspect. I wouldn’t feel safe walking alone through here because I would be anxious and constantly looking over my shoulder for people following me. I would feel safer running through the path, which this is usually used for, because it would allow me to get away from any unsafe people faster. If the weather was nicer and there was a lot more people outside, playing on the lawn, then I would feel safer because it provides a sense of community and it makes it a safe place for me to stroll around. If that were the case and if it wasn’t as isolated as it was in the picture, I would feel safe walking here alone.
