A Green Cart in Spanish Harlem
I live in Spanish Harlem (East Harlem) which is located on the east side of Manhattan and starts from 96th street and ends at 142nd street. This picture was taken at 106th and 3rd avenue. This Green cart is always available to customers from the 9am till 7pm. This Green cart is located right in front of a Duane Reade. It is also located at a busy area where people would go to buy food and clothing. This Green cart is also right across many fast-food chain restaurants. This Green Cart sells a variety of fruits and is also near a large supermarket. My mother would visit this Green cart every day and buy strawberries or oranges. One big question I have for these Green carts all around New York is what happens to the fruits when they get spoiled? Do they get compost?
A Condo in Spanish Harlem
This building is located between 103rd & 104th and on Lexington Avenue. This building was just recently built and is right near many public housing. The area this building was built was a garden 5 years ago. It’s located right next the 6 line 103rd street station. This building is surrounded by many restaurants and social clubs. One thing I noticed about this building compare to others is that it has a balcony and if you walk around my neighborhood you would hardly see any buildings with a balcony. This building is also a block away from an elementary school and I see this building every day when I go to school.
A Grocery Store in Spanish Harlem
This is a grocery store that is located on 104th and between 3rd and Lexington Avenue. This is a grocery store that sells many Mexican products and also sells fruits and vegetables outside and inside of the store. Across from the grocery is a building that has a youth program. This grocery store is located between many houses. This is one of many grocery stores that are in my neighborhood. In my neighborhood every two blocks there is a grocery store. This grocery store to me is most unique and stands out because of what kind of products they sell and how they sell their products. Similar question I had for the Green Cart is applied to the grocery stores around New York City and what I want to know is what happens to the fruits when they spoil? Again do they get compost?
Subsidized Housing in Spanish Harlem
This is the George Washington public housing that is located all around Spanish Harlem. This public housing is surrounded by many fast-food chains and restaurants. These buildings are typically dirty and not cleaned at a daily routine. The garbage that is supposed to be collected by the sanitary department is very noticeable. Each block contains up to 4 buildings that are 18 stories tall. In the middle of the 4 buildings is a park that is shared between them. One question that I have about public housing is as gentrification is happening in Spanish Harlem is the rent increasing? Are people moving out because of the rent increasing? Where are the people going?
A Supermarket in Spanish Harlem
This is a supermarket that sells many types of products. This supermarket is located between 104th and 105th street and 3rd avenue. This supermarket sells things from cleaning products to furniture. My mom always comes here to buy Clorox or other cleaning items because the prices are very low. In front of the store is a stand that sells covers for cell phones, movies and books. The supermarket is also right next to a Burger King and a McDonald. I always visit this store when I have to do a project for school because they have everything. Whenever I pass by this store its always crowded. This store has been around as long as I have lived in Spanish Harlem. One question I have with this supermarket is does the supermarket affect the gentrification of Spanish Harlem? Do they have to shut down this store to open name brand companies?
