Here is a recent New York Times article on affordable housing in New York City. This is a term that has been used in class and should be problematized.

This article was extremely thought provoking as it challenged a term that we as New Yorkers are always so keen to use: affordable housing. Personally, I have never given the term much thought, always defining it as an advantage NYC held for low-income residents. In all reality though, as the article made me realize, it is a term far from reality. Really thinking about it, in a city run by million dollar homes, not much affordable housing really exists. And what may be affordable for one person may not be the same for another. It's really unfortunate to see how so many homes can no longer be considered affordable by mid-low income residents, when they're the ones who may need it the most. Next to my building, there is a vacant two-floor apartment building that has been vacant for over three months now. It is a semi-expensive neighborhood, so not many low income families may be able to afford living there. But it bothers me that there are so many families, many even homeless, who could reside here, but are unable to due to due to the income inequality.
